Get to Know: SharonPublished October 5, 2017 by Eva Tanenbaum in Wishful Thinking
There’s more ‘Wish’ to get to know!
This time meet Sharon! She’s practically living in an episode of “I love the 80’s” and could compete on an episode of “Cake Wars” with your cake decorating skills.
What’s your job title? Describe what you do.
Almost 22 years ago, I was hired as a marker maker with an added incentive to design when I had time. A marker is essentially the blueprint for cutting. It incorporates patterns in all the fabrics for all the sizes needed for a style for specific orders. I lay patterns efficiently into a marker keeping in mind the width and type of fabric as well as other variables. I’ve been extremely busy with marker making lately so I haven’t had much time to design. I did have 6 best sellers in one dance catalog earlier in my start at Wish.
What’s the most fun part if your job?
Considering marker making is like playing Tetris or puzzle making, my job is pretty fun! Our styles are never exactly the same so its never monotonous. Also with each marker I typically have a costume sample to ensure I lay all pattern pieces for that style in the marker. Therefore, I get to see every single costume that will be going into production!
Tell us a fun or funny memory from working at ‘Wish’.
One year we created a Harlem Shake Youtube video. WE got dressed up in our costumes and danced around. It was hysterical!
Did you dance as a kid? Do you still dance?
Professionally, I did not but socially absolutely. My sister, Beth and I took ballroom dance classes for fun. I still love dancing to this day.
Where and for what did you go to school for?
I went to the school formerly known as Philadelphia College of Textile & Science (now Jefferson + Philadelphia University). I received my Bachelor Science degree in Fashion Design.
Did you have a different job before ‘Wish’?
My 1st job out of college I was a marker maker as well. But the added incentive to be able to design is what brought me to Wish.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a passion for art. I always knew I would be an artist of some sort.
What are a few of your favorite things?
Headpieces! They’re my passion, my uniform. I have to wear something fun every day. I also love Hello Kitty, cake decorating and Philly excursions with my daughters, Raven Starling.
What’s your spirit animal?
Zebras definitely are. Even though they share the similar black and white pattern, each individual is different.
Who are your favorite artists?
